Former Government Building

The Former Government Building was designed in 1911 by J.C. Maddison (1850−1923). With its imposing Renaissance palazzo style, the Former Government Building has a powerful presence in the Square and
Worcester Street. Its style contrasts with the predominant Gothic style of many of the City’s buildings.

This building now is home to accommodation, bars, cafes and a barbers!

Next door on Worcester Street is the State Insurance Building (1935−1937) designed by Cecil Wood.
